At first, the question was where we were going to move to. We had opportunities in Germany, the UK, the US, and probably several other places in the world. Due to family circumstances, however, the decision to move home was pretty easy (which isn’t always a good thing).
So now…we’re faced with the big question. Where are we going to live!? When we moved to Europe, we sold everything. House? Sold it. Cars? Sold them. Furniture (what little we had to start with)? Either sold it or went into storage (I think we have a couch in storage…maybe also an IKEA cart for the kitchen. Maybe). Basically, we’re starting from scratch. I don’t even think we have a vacuum. How sad is that!?
So now…the decision has been made, and we’re in the process of finding a place to hold our crap for at least another 3-5 years. I can’t say for certain it’ll be longer than that (hell, I can’t even say for certain it’ll be that long, but we can hope), and it’s daunting. We’re not sure if we want to buy a “fixer-upper” and go that route, or buy a house that is move-in ready. Or, there’s the every popular option of just building from scratch! It’s overwhelming! We really want to be budget conscious, because we’re unsure as to whether I’ll end up being a stay-at-home-mom when it comes time to have children, so we’re only planning to use Jamie’s salary when it comes to budgeting. Plus, we have no need (or desire) for a large house. After living in Japan, and now Europe, we’re used to smaller places. We don’t need a lot of space, even with children, so having a large house really isn’t on the top of our list.
Currently, Jamie is back in the States for work. He’s been looking at some houses while he’s there, but nothing has really stood out to him. I’m hoping that once he gets back we have a more definite timeline on when the move home will occur, and then we’ll plan a house hunting trip back to the US. I’d like to have a good idea of what option we’re going for at that point (buy or build), and then go from there.
I can’t believe this is all happening in a few short months. Our three years here have absolutely flown by! It’s going to be so hard to leave, but I know that this move is the right one for our family.
*And in terms of travel…next up will be our weekend trip to Plitvice Lakes, Croatia! We’re going over my 30th birthday, so it should be a great birthday gift/vacation! After that…Marrakesh!!! We haven’t finalized booking for that, but I’ll be sure to blog about where we’re going/staying once we do!
